San Gimignano Tour

1,5 hours tour

Called the „Manhattan of the Middle Ages“ it owes its fame to the medieval towers that at the time soared in the sky 72 times.

Nowdays they are much less, but they still give an idea of what apperead in the eyes of a pilgrim that arrived along the Via Francigena looking for a shelter to stay overnight and to pay a tribute to God in the beautiful Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta. A church that still shows its original appearance, a more quite than rare case in Tuscany.

Mainly medieval architecture, narrow streets that suddenly offer unforgattable views of the Chianti hills, typical shops where you can enjoy cold cuts, wine, oil and saffron.

The “best ice cream in the world”, the best preserved medieval towers in history and views that you usually find in the postcards…

this is San Gimignano, medieval gem of Tuscany and a Unesco heritage site.

 

Tour informations

An hour and a half tour that will take you to discover the medieval life of San Gimignano. Crossing alleys, squares and suggestive corners you will breathe part of what was life of the Middle Ages. During the guided tour you can stop any time to take a picture to immortalize this jewel and taste the typical products that this area offers.

We will start from the external part of the medieval walls to cross a section of the Via Francigena, which cuts San Gimignano exactly in two. We will enjoy the view while talking about the tower house, a symbol of power of the time and we will dwell upon the central Piazza della Cisterna. A visit to the very interesting Collegiate Church will complete the tour by discovering its original frescos from the 1300s, which tell the biblical scenes in a natural and spontaneous way, as only in the Middle Ages knew how to do.

The tour of the city of San Gimignano is ideally combined, in addition to the Volterra tour, with the other tours of Tuscany that we have decided to offer you. All together they propose a different vision of the region, a vision that is light years away from the tourist image that is often given.

We recommend the Bolgheri bike tour that begins by renting fun pedal assisted bicycles from Marina di Bibbona and ends by tasting excellent wines directly in local farms. The tour we called Bolgheri & Wine does not need many explanations and finally a visit to the Gulf of Baratti and Populonia. A separate chapter are all the tours of Lucca
