Volterra Tour

1,5 hours tour

A guided visit tour of Volterra, the ancient Etruscan Velathri founded more than 2500 yeas ago, gives you a trip among a long history that can be felt in every corner of its historic centre and breathtaking view from 250 meters above sea level hill.

We are in the heart of Tuscany, about 40 km from the sea and 70 km from Florence and Pisa. The city can be reached thanks to state roads of great beauty and charm which wind through the Tuscan hills, those same hills that are represented on the magazines and media around the world.

The city still preserves some examples of the Etruscan civilization, attributable to a small part of its walls and two access gates to the city, with although a strong presence of the Roman remains and especially the medieval ones.

Volterra offers in fact beautiful architectural glimpses traceable back to the 1200/1300era, among which the oldest government palace in Tuscany stands out, its so-called Palazzo dei Priori, dating back to 1208, overlooks the homonymous square chosen even as the ancient seat of council of vampires in the set of the movie Twilight. A story that has led many tourists in search of the locations of Bella and Edward.

However, let’s not forget the tradistions, Volterra remains strongly linked to the past, the small streets, the remains of the Roman era, including the interesting Roman theater which came to light only in 1900 and the fortress restored in the Medicean era.

Tour informations

An hour and a half tour that will take you to discover all the historical ages which characterized Volterra. We will explore the medieval architecture, soaring views all around the hill where the city is located and we will analyze together what are the most significant remains of its ancient origin.

We will contnue the tour visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the ennexed Baptistery of San Giovanni, two architectures that are evidence of the influence of the Pisan culture. 1200. Crossing the medieval quarters full of “scapitozzate” (capped) towers, we will reach the remains of the Roman theater and we will visit the oldest alabaster working activity in Volterra, a material that has long been a source of income and trade for the city. The tour will end with a visit to the Medici fortress, an austere stronghold placed on the highest point of the Volterra hill. Built by the Florentines on the remains of the Etruscan walls and the Castel of the Bishops, nowdays is a penitentiary. In the vast meadow where the fortress stands, there is also the archaeological area that tells the story of the original acropolis where three layers of civilizations have overlapped over time, Etruscan, Roman and medieval.

1 hour and a half guided tour of the city of Volterra, entrance tot he Cathedral and Baptistery (based on opnening hours).

Our proposal

This tour of the city of Volterra is ideally combined with the other tours of Tuscany that we have decided to offer you. All together they propose a different vision of the region, a vision that is light years away from the tourist image that is often given.

We recommend the Bolgheri bike tour that begins by renting fun pedal assisted bicycles from Marina di Bibbona and ends by tasting excellent wines directly in local farms. The tour we called Bolgheri & Wine does not need many explanations and finally a visit to the Gulf of Baratti and Populonia. A separate chapter are all the tours of Lucca
