Volterra and San Gimignano
Among the most fascinating medieval villages in Tuscany.
About 2500 years ago, a nomadic people chose these hilly areas to strategically settle there and raise what has been the most important civilization in the history of Tuscany. Volterra and San Gimignano, two gems perched on their hills, which respectively dominate the Val di Cecina and Val d’Elsa. Enclosed by walls, they tell about themselves through medieval alleys, panoramic views and towers that rise up over the much vaunted Tuscan countryside, full of vineyards, olive groves and rural farms that you will cross to reach these two destinations.
Volterra is easily reachable from the main cities of Tuscany, 30 km from the Etruscan coast, 60 km from Pisa, San Gimignano and Florence and 40 km from Siena. In addition being located 29 km from one another allows a one day visit that includes both. A visit that will lead you to the discovery of the Etruscan, Roman and medieval remains which offer a unique atmosphere that take you back to the past.
Not only a walk through history, but also a journey to discover traditions, such as the alabaster of Volterra, the culinary treats as the Vernaccia of San Gimignano and its safron. Both full of wine bars and typical inns where you can taste the typical and famous Tuscan cuisine enjoying breathtaking views. Of course all this after having allowed ourselves to get lost into art by visiting the beautiful Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, full of original frescoes from the 1300s or the fascinating Palazzo dei Priori in Volterra, one of the first examples of the regional government palace.
